Havre de Grace has rich history, which dates back to Maryland’s Colonial Period. The town's unusual name came from the Marquis de Lafayette, who claimed it reminded him of Le Havre, France. Lafayette spent time in Havre de Grace during the Revolutionary War and the town almost became America's capitol. During the 19th century, Havre de Grace became an important part of the lumber, fishing packing and canning industries, thanks to its location on the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal.
